“Mid-July Mariposa Lilies” celebrates mid-summer at 8,500 feet. With abundant rainfall this year (2023), the starkly white mariposa lilies are especially tall, so it’s very easy to pick them out among the sagebrush. Also in mid-summer, harebells are emerging. Painting the mariposa lilies, sage, and harebells together gives a very specific voice to this specific time (about July 15th) and place (the summit trailhead behind the rest stop on I-80), ephemeral as it is. It’s a bit of a postcard from my past self to my future self - “Remember this time and place, especially the little things”
