We celebrate a lot of birthdays and other occasions in the picnic areas at Vedauwoo, and during one such celebration, I found a beautiful, showy cluster of wild bergamot (sometimes called bee balm), along with sticky geranium and Norwegian cinquefoil. Wild bergamot looks particularly unruly, with light purple and sometimes pink flowers spread askew. This is one of the things I love about wildflowers - they truly have personalities, usually raggedy ones. Another perk of hanging out near wild bergamot is that it attracts many pollinators, including hummingbirds!
