Story behind the horses:
As a Cow-camp Manager in Clark, Wyoming, I oversaw a 45,000-acre summer cattle allotment on the Beartooth Mountain range. My team of young cowboys managed various tasks for 1,000 Black Angus cattle, including water, weeds, fencing, bears, wolves, salt distribution, pasture changes, driving cattle, and caring for 10 horses and several dogs.
The two horses shown were my favorites. Zan, my personal dark bay horse, was strong and gentle. I trained him to be versatile for all ranch duties. Rio, the red roan horse behind Zan, belonged to Gary Hogeboom, a friend and former Dallas Cowboys quarterback. I trained Rio for Gary's visits.
This photo was taken one misty morning as they stood saddled in front of our cow camp bunkhouse. Our task that day was to pack salt blocks five miles into the wilderness. This drawing was inspired by those memories of cowboy life in northern Wyoming.
