The mountain ball cactus can be found at a higher elevation than any other species of cactus in North America. I do remember on my very first trail run to the top of Pole Mountain, I saw this cactus for the first time ever and was amazed at its ability to persist at almost 9,000 feet in a windswept opening in the forest. Even more impressive were the beautiful, bright pink flowers it produced. One of my other favorite oddities about this cactus is the way it shows up as spherical in the summer, and seems to shrink into the ground and flatten during the winter.
