From the artist:
The plains prickly pear cactus can be found throughout a very wide range, somehow surviving the cold in Canada’s Yukon Territory, and the heat in the desert of northern Mexico. It is an important food for prairie dogs in winter, and is also eaten by pronghorn antelope, and its fruit by humans. In June, you can find the large, translucent, yellow and peach flowers blooming across the prairie and through other ecosystems in Wyoming. They are one of my very favorite early summer flowers, and there is nothing else like them!
