From the artist:
Purple, or Colorado columbine (columbine meaning “doves”, as the flowers resemble a flock of doves), grows at high altitudes in aspen groves, open forests, meadows, and talus slopes. It is very common to find it growing in the Snowies in talus fields along the Lakes Trail that begins at Mirror Lake and passes Lookout Lake along the base of Medicine Bow Peak. This flower really exemplifies the Snowies during the height of summer in mid-July. In the Snowies, you are also likely to see all-white columbine mixed in with purple.
