Collection: Lynne Davis : Mixed Media
Artist Statement:
At heart, I am a way-finder.
I notice strange things along the way, like unexpected connections in nature and life; things like boundaries, thresholds, viewpoints and potential. Sometimes I experience unexpected insight into how these things seem to work in harmony in our world. I ponder how that harmony might be represented in a three-dimensional work of art.
My work attempts to express this search for connection and potential by using 2D and 3D forms as its means, mixed media as its vehicle, and beauty-through-craft as its beaconing song. I have practiced a number of artistic techniques over 40+ years -- including metal arts, paint, graphic arts, fiber arts, bead-weaving, and more -- and I draw on learnings from each to produce my work today. My style is influenced by early-mid 20th century Arts and Crafts.
I use various, often recycled, natural and fabricated materials and create small structures that can integrate metal framing with fiber joinery, for example, or printed work that captures layers of digital imagery on paper or various substrates.
My creative process often begins in earnest with my hands. After sketching an idea, exploring scraps and leftover bits and pieces of material, and making odd pairings of diverse media, my hands help me see what goes together, both figuratively and practically. Then I ask, where can I add a bit of tension or color? Where will the surprise be? This is how I find my way.
Thank you for your interest in my work.
Artist Bio:
A Pennsylvania native, Lynne married in New Mexico, moved to Colorado and then to Wyoming over a period of 50 years. In 2013 she retired from a career designing user interfaces for a national science digital library. Unofficially, she's been a "creative" all her life in one form or another as she has engaged in myriad creative techniques, including the practice of mother- and grandmother-hood.
In Colorado, Lynne served on the Board of Directors for a large Makerspace at which she launched a Metalcraft and Lapidary shop and taught metalsmithing for several years. There also, Lynne learned enough related craft and artistic techniques to last a lifetime and was led to explore mixed media. She now is busy making, and in the early career stage of showing and selling her unique mixed media works in local venues in Colorado and Wyoming and soon to be online.
